At Barwon Heads Primary School we aim to inspire our students and assist them in developing a life-long love of learning whilst developing enduring skills in Literacy. Our whole school approach ensures continuity of teaching strategies which are constantly revised and evaluated according to the contemporary research into best practice. The E5 instructional model plays a significant role in this process.


Our whole school approach to word study and spelling focuses primarily on the patterns and features within words, as well as the history behind our English language. Teachers are becoming skilled facilitators in encouraging students to actively participate in this engaging and hands-on approach to developing vocabulary and language structures at their own pace and level.

The daily Literacy Block incorporates two hours of Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening where there is a strong focus on comprehension, grammar, punctuation and spelling.


During literacy sessions, students develop their understanding and skills through a variety of small group, whole group and individual instruction, designed to cater for specific learning needs whilst encouraging each and every student to become independent readers and writers. Strong links are made between reading and writing and all students develop skills in a wide variety of genre.

Resources and support:

Access to a wireless network and notebooks enhances the student Literacy outcomes as they access internet resources for independent project work and research particularly in the upper grades. Reading Recovery Early Intervention program provides highly valued support to young children in grade 1 who have been identified as experiencing difficulty with literacy and is an integral part of the Level 2 literacy program.

At Barwon Heads all levels use the Fountas And Pinnell reading assessment tool to establish reading comprehension levels and each child’s progress is tracked as they move through the school.

Our Whole school word study program Words Their Way, is used in each level and enables teachers to differentiate spelling for each child based on their individual needs and abilities.

We take great pride in the development and implementation of our Literacy program and its associated achievements at Barwon Heads and are committed to supporting our staff in ongoing professional learning and the establishment of best practice in this area.
